How to Apply Hair Oil???

Applying oil to hair is one of the ways to improve hair strength and hair quality as per Ayurvedic principles. Apart from improving hair qualities, applying hair oil also has other benefits such as – sleep improvement, calmness of mind, remedy for headache etc. Based on the desired effects, the time and method of application of hair oil change…

Suppose you are taking head bath twice in a week, according to this rule, you may apply hair oil, twice a week, on the nights before the head bath day.

Applying hair oil on the day, after bath is not desirable because, the oil may attract dust over the hairs, when you go out in Sun.

But if you are at home only and love applying hair oil during day, only a minimum quantity of one teaspoon is sufficient. Apply directly to hair roots.

For the purpose of hair growth, the oil can be applied to the hair root, scalp and to the length of hair.

Some people heat the oil in water bath, before application, which is perfectly fine, provided it is only mild heat.

People with headache, red colored rashes on the scalp, people with pitta imbalance should not opt for hot oil hair treatment.

If you are accustomed to apply hair oil daily, then a little quantity of hair oil can be applied daily in the morning. As a general rule, it is better not to expose hair to direct sunlight or dust, especially after applying hair oil.

And so here at our clinic I find so many patients suffering from mental illness. As in such cases Ayurveda has much to offer to treat this highest ranking disorder nowadays.

Here I just discuss a one important aspect of treatment – Shirodhara.

Shirodhara  is a procedure wherein medicated oil, decoction, milk, buttermilk is poured continuously without interruption for a specific period of time.

Curd and its Benefits – An Ayurveda View

Curd / Yogurt is a very common and routine food that we eat in our day-to-day life…But there is so many facts that common people dont know about it.
Ayurveda described the benifits and sideeffects of Curd in detail.
Ayurveda’s Scholar Aacharya shri Vagbhatta ji mentioned the qualities of Curd like this—>>

” अम्लपाकरसं ग्राहि  गुरु उष्णम दधि वातजित  I
मेदः शुक्र बल श्लेष्म पित्त रक्त अग्नि शोफ़्कृत I
रोचिष्णु शस्तमरुचौ शितके विषं ज्वरे II
पिनसे मूत्रकुर्छे च , रूक्षं तु ग्रहणी गदे I
नैवद्यानषि नैवोष्नाम वसन्तोष्णशरत्सु न II
नामुदग्सुपं नाक्षोद्रं तन्नाघृतसितोपलं I
न चानंलकं नापि नित्यं नो मन्द मन्यथा II
ज्वर असृक् पित विसर्प् कुष्टः पाण्डु भ्रम प्रदम् I”

Lets see qualities of Curd / Yogurt—>
  • It absorbs water from intestines (hence called as Grahi in Ayurveda). By the virtue of this property it is widely used to treat diarrhea and dysentery.
  • It causes heaviness when used in excess and may cause constipation.
  • It mitigates vata dosha, increases kapha and pitta. Curd should not be used in diseases where blood is vitiated by doshas.
  • Regular consumption of this in pure form increases body fat and may cause obesity.
  • Curd helps to increase quality and quantity of semen.
  • It strengthens the body.
  • Consumption of curd accelerates digestion (agni), stimulates taste buds and acts as an appetizer.
  • It is found beneficial in diseases of duodenum.
  • It reduces irritability of bladder and helps in emptying bladder easily.

Dos and donts for using curd:—>>>

  • Curd should not be eaten at nights.
  • It should not be boiled or heated.
  • Always it has to be mixed with honey / sugar /Amla churna or a churna directed by your doctor before consuming.
  • Its properties get enhanced when mixed with cooked green gram or ghee or gooseberries (amla , Embelica Officinalis).
  • Curd should be used only when it is well formed or completely coagulated.
  • Consumption of incompletely coagulated curd may flare up herpes outbreaks, psoriasis, bleeding inhemorrhoids, ibs etc. and may cause giddiness.

Home remedies using curd—>>>

  • Dandruff is a known cause of hair loss. Applying sour curd as a pack to scalp and hair , once in a week prevents formation of dandruff.
  • Mix moong dal (green gram) powder with curd and massage it to scalp and brush it on hair. Wash it off after 1 hour. This helps to prevent hair loss and dandruff. It also helps to increase hair growth.
  • Dry orange peel in summer and powder it. Mix this powder with little curds massage it on face and neck. This acts as an excellent cleanser and cleanses clogged pores thus preventing acne and pimples.
  • Curds when mixed with sugar acts as an excellent body coolant and instant energizer. It also quenches thirst.
  • A mixture of besan (gram flour) is an excellent pack to rejuvenate facial skin and body skin.
  • Lactose in milk is converted by Yogurt’s bacteria into lactic acid which helps digest lactose or dairy products.
  • The lactic acid of yoghurt is a perfect medium to maximize calcium absorption.
  • As a curative in intestinal disorder
  • Since curd is more easily digested than milk,(depends on individual’s digestive fire)  it is given during stomach and intestinal disorders. The lactic acid bacteria present in the curd acts as a scavenger and creates a healthy environment in the intestine.
  • Your bowel’s best friend
  • Curd flushes out the toxic matter, which overloads the bowels.
  • If one does not consume curd, the individual may suffer not only from intestinal disorders, but also many bowel disorders especially diarrhoea and gastroenteritis because curd cures all the above disorders.
  • Good for treating ulcers (use only after advise of Ayurveda Doctor)

Calcium is very essential for the healing of ulcers. Since the absorption of calcium is double with the curd consumption as compared to the milk, is gives much relief from the pain and discomfort due to ulcers. Therefore, curd has anti-ulcer property and it is an excellent remedy when even there is a stomach irritation. In an hour only 32 per cent of the raw milk is digested as against 91 per cent of the curd. The lactic acid content in the curd helps in the assimilation of calcium and phosphorus. Moreover, some individuals may show intolerance to milk called “lactose intolerance”, but they show tolerance to curd.

  • For mental health

Curd cures migraine and the biotin, a vitamin present in the curd is very important for mental health.

  • As a cosmetic

When applied to the face, it cures acne. Curd is also applied as a face pack to prevent wrinkles. Down the ages, women have used the curd to soften their skin. The recent breakthrough in skin care is the discovery of AHA’S – Alpha Hydroxy Acids by an American dermatologist. AHA’S are fruit acids derived from milk and the fruits. One of the AHA’S is the lactic acid found in the curd. Hence curd can make a very good base ingredient for face packs to keep the wrinkles at bay.

  • Curd is a good hair conditioner.
It provides good nourishment to hair and add a healthier look to the hair. Research indicates that the lactic acid bacteria present in the curd manufactures some anti-grey hair vitamins and also produces the vitamins which helps to stimulate the hair growth.
All this benifits are told for information, curd may not be suitable to sensitive persons that I found in my routine clinic practice. So consume it aas a food, but If  you are taking it as a medication, consult the Ayurveda Doctor first.

Hair Fall – White hair – unhealthy hair

White hair in very younger age and Hair fall is the most common problem nowadays. So many youngsters complaining such things.

It’s a lifestyle disorder actually. The lifestyle—how we are living, what our habits and what we are thinking —this entire things play imp role on our health.

Late rise in morning, late night parties, Junk food consumption, Spicy – oily food, innutritious food, anger, stress – all these factors leaves bad impact on hair.

Very simple but if your sleep is not proper then also your hair may become brittle, white n tends to fall also.

Well all this are causative factors which affects your hair from inside the body…! Some factors are there, which play imp role for hair fall n white hair.

Excessive uses of chemicals, soaps, harsh shampoos, colors, hair dye, hair gel, straitening chemicals, conditioners, and etc so many things we are using in routine life. Unnecessarily and frequent use of such things can harm your hair very badly.

We just go to shop by watching attractive advertises and start using them without any sense. Instead of that we must consult our Ayurveda doctor to know the hair type. In Ayurveda there are so many herbal medications which can be suitable for different types of hairs.

Mind well, only one product doesn’t suits each and every hair problems. One should know his/her hair type and then according to that Ayurveda doctor prescribes you a medicated Hair oil /Hair Shampoo /Hair Packs to apply on hair. For various problems there are so many Hair packs n Oil etc available at our clinic also.

Hair packs are of different types. It’s for oily hair / dry hair / split hair / white hair / hair fall n etc. The choice of herbs in the combination plays imp role, and the choice is part of expert Ayurveda doctors.

Likewise Hair oils are of different types. One should choose the oil according to his/her hair types.

Avoid above factors which I mentioned to preserve the health of your hair, along with that consume good food like Milk, Figs, Green Vegetables, Amala Churn, and the other food which is rich in vitamin /calcium and nutrition. All types of nutritious food is essentials. Do consult your doctors and take more advise in Herbs and Food also.

Some Panchkarma like shirodhara / Nasyam / Basti / and other therapies are also makes your hair healthy n lustrous like never before. Ayurveda have power to do so.  Meditation / Yoga and Pranayam also helps to reduce hair fall.

So don’t just attract by advertises, Change your lifestyle and change your food for better health….! Something bad we have to leave for some good things.

A big beauty problem of now a days is of  hair care. Almost all beautician’s bread-butter is this topic…! Weather women or men, everybody needs good Healthy Hair.

Lets see how we manage health of our Hair…!.

Tips for Healthy Hair—>

  • Wash your Hair regularly and make them clean
  • avoid hard chemicals in forms of Hair gel, Conditioner or such
  • use mild shampoos for everyday use
  • cover your hair with cap/ helmet while driving and avoid direct exposure to sun and dry wind
  • Try to eat food at regular time
  • food habits also plays imp role in Hair care
  • avoid junk food, take enough water intake according to your body need, consume good nutritious food, vegetables and fruits
  • Avoid brushing wet hair. This will cause the hair to stretch and finally break.
  • use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush to gently remove the knots.
  • Avoid maximum use of dryer
  • Avoid pulling back your hair tightly
  • Never wash your hair with very hot or very cold water
  • Learn to relax. Hair loss can happen because of stress. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin B, C and E
  • Massage the Scalp with pure coconut oil. This will also help growth of hair.
  • Apply coconut oil which has been boiled with small onions for about 20 minutes. Wash it off with a mixture of green gram powder and water drained from cooked (boiled) rice.
  • Apply a mixture of almond oil and gooseberry juice with finger tips on the scalp.
  • Apply the warm mixture of olive oil, lemon juice and coconut oil. Do a steam -towel- wrap for 15 minutes and wash the hair with a mild shampoo
  • Apply a paste of fenugreek and mustard to the scalp.
  • Mix Shikakai powder with the water drained from the cooked rice and wash the hair with it.
  • Crush  the leaves of five petal hibiscus flower and take the juice. Wash the hair with this juice.
  • Heat oil with a little camphor. Apply the oil in the scalp and massage for 10 minutes. After 30 minutes wash the hair with a herbal shampoo. Do the steam -towel- wrap for 15 minutes.
  • Apply the mixture of an egg white, 2 spoons of castor oil, 1 spoon glycerin, in the scalp and hair. Wash it after some time.
  • Do a ‘steam-towel-wrap’ once in a while, if your cuticles are damaged, as this steaming opens out the pores and absorbs the oil.
