Butter is Better

==>>Are you still shunning butter from your diet? You can stop today because butter (Ayurveda butter) can be a very healthy part of your diet.

Butter is known as “Navaneeta”  or “Ghrit” in Sanskrit.  Butter is usually made from cow’s or buffalo’s milk.Butter prepared out of cow’s milk contains saturated fats, monosaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, plenty of Vitamin A, Vtamin D, Vitamin D and Cholesterol.

Texts of Ayurveda consider butter prepared from milk of cow, buffalo and sheep for medicinal use. The health benefits of butter are very well explained in Ayurveda.

Butter prepared from cow’s milk has the following medicinal properties.

  • Use of Ghee in Ayurveda:

In Ayurveda, most of the important Medhya aushadhi (Psychotropic Drugs) have been used in the form of ghrita or ghee .The best examples being Unmada, Apasmara and certain syndromes involving CNS like balagraha like Skanda ,Skandapasmara etc. The main clinical features of these diseases being altered sensorium, behavioral changes, seizure manifestations and partial or total loss of higher functions of brain. The extensive use of ghee in such conditions in Ayurveda compels us to think why this dosage form in particular was selected.

  • Qualities of Cow’s Ghee:

Ayurveda has indicated the use of cow’s ghee i.e go-ghrita, whenever the reference of ghee arises in the treatment. A brief glance at the qualities of go-ghrita shows that it has been described as Buddhivardhaka-augmenting intelligence, Smritivardhaka-enhancing memory, Deepana-improves appetite and is useful in the treatment of unmada, apasmara, murccha and mada. Again its worth noticing that all these are the diseases affecting the nervous system in particular.

  • Chemical composition of Ghee (Cow’s Ghee):

Ghrita is abundant in saturated fatty acids. It contains approximately 8% saturated fatty acids which make it easily digestible. The digestibility co-efficient or the rate of adsorption is 96% which is better than any other animal or vegitable fat. It contains triglycerides, diglycerides, monoglycerides, phospholipids, contains beta carotene 600 IU and Vitamin E which are known anti oxidants.

Why Butter is Better???

  • Vitamins …

Butter is a rich source of easily absorbed vitamin A, needed for a wide range of functions, from maintaining good vision to keeping the endocrine system in top shape.Butter also contains all the other fat-soluble vitamins (D, E and K2), which are often lacking in the modern industrial diet.

  • Minerals ..

Butter is rich in important trace minerals, including manganese, chromium, zinc, copper and selenium (a powerful antioxidant). Butter provides more selenium per gram than wheat germ or herring. Butter is also an excellent source of iodine.

  • Fatty Acids …

Butter provides appreciable amounts of short- and medium-chain fatty acids, which support immune function, boost metabolism and have anti-microbial properties; that is, they fight against pathogenic microorganisms in the intestinal tract.

  • Butter also provides the perfect balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fats. Arachidonic acid in butter is important for brain function, skin health and prostaglandin balance.
  • Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) …

When butter comes from cows eating green grass, it contains high levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a compound that gives excellent protection against cancer and also helps your body build muscle rather than store fat.

  • Glycospingolipids …

These are a special category of fatty acids that protect against gastrointestinal infections, especially in the very young and the elderly. Children given reduced-fat milks have higher rates of diarrhea than those who drink whole milk.

  • Cholesterol …

Despite all of the misinformation you may have heard, cholesterol is needed to maintain intestinal health and for brain and nervous system development in the young.

  • Wulzen Factor …

A hormone-like substance that prevents arthritis and joint stiffness, ensuring that calcium in your body is put into your bones rather than your joints and other tissues. The Wulzen factor is present only in raw butter and cream; it is destroyed by pasteurization.

 Butter and Your Health

Is butter really healthy? Let us count the ways …

  1. Heart Disease
Butter contains many nutrients that protect against heart disease including vitamins A, D, K2, and E, lecithin, iodine and selenium. A Medical Research Council survey showed that men eating butter ran half the risk of developing heart disease as those using margarine.
  2. Cancer
The short- and medium-chain fatty acids in butter have strong anti-tumor effects. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in butter from grass-fed cows also gives excellent protection against cancer.
  3. Arthritis
The Wulzen or “anti-stiffness” factor in raw butter and also Vitamin K2 in grasss-fed butter, protect against calcification of the joints as well as hardening of the arteries, cataracts and calcification of the pineal gland. Calves fed pasteurized milk or skim milk develop joint stiffness and do not thrive.
  4. Osteoporosis
Vitamins A, D and K2 in butter are essential for the proper absorption of calcium and phosphorus and hence necessary for strong bones and teeth.
  5. Thyroid Health
Butter is a good source of iodine, in a highly absorbable form. Butter consumption prevents goiter in mountainous areas where seafood is not available. In addition, vitamin A in butter is essential for proper functioning of the thyroid gland.
  6. Digestion
Glycospingolipids in butterfat protect against gastrointestinal infection, especially in the very young and the elderly.
  7. Growth & Development
Many factors in the butter ensure optimal growth of children, especially iodine and vitamins A, D and K2. Low-fat diets have been linked to failure to thrive in children — yet low-fat diets are often recommended for youngsters!
  8. Asthma
Saturated fats in butter are critical to lung function and protect against ashthma.
  9. Overweight
CLA and short- and medium-chain fatty acids in butter help control weight gain.
  10. Fertility
Many nutrients contained in butter are needed for fertility and normal reproduction.

Why You Should Avoid Margarine, Shortening and Spreads

There are a myriad of unhealthy components to margarine and other butter imposters, including:

  • Trans fats: These unnatural fats in margarine, shortenings and spreads are formed during the process of hydrogenation, which turns liquid vegetable oils into a solid fat
Trans fats contribute to heart disease, cancer, bone problems, hormonal imbalance and skin disease; infertility, difficulties in pregnancy and problems with lactation; and low birth weight, growth problems and learning disabilities in children.A U.S. government panel of scientists determined that man-made trans fats are unsafe at any level. (Small amounts of natural trans fats occur in butter and other animal fats, but these are not harmful.)
  • Free radicals: Free radicals and other toxic breakdown products are the result of high temperature industrial processing of vegetable oils. They contribute to numerous health problems, including cancer and heart disease.
  • Synthetic vitamins: Synthetic vitamin A and other vitamins are added to margarine and spreads. These often have an opposite (and detrimental) effect compared to the natural vitamins in butter.
  • Emulsifiers and preservatives: Numerous additives of questionable safety are added to margarines and spreads. Most vegetable shortening is stabilized with preservatives like BHT.
  • Hexane and other solvents: Used in the extraction process, these industrial chemicals can have toxic effects.
  • Bleach: The natural color of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil is grey so manufacturers bleach it to make it white. Yellow coloring is then added to margarine and spreads.
  • Artificial flavors: These help mask the terrible taste and odor of partially hydrogenated oils, and provide a fake butter taste.
  • Mono- and di-glycerides: These contain trans fats that manufacturers do not have to list on the label. They are used in high amounts in so-called “low-trans” spreads.
  • Soy protein isolate: This highly processed powder is added to “low-trans” spreads to give them body. It can contribute to thyroid dysfunction, digestive disorders and many other health problems.
  • Sterols: Often added to spreads to give them cholesterol-lowering qualities, these estrogen compounds can cause endocrine problems; in animals these sterols contribute to sexual inversion.

How to Purchase Butter

The BEST butter is raw butter from grass-fed cows, preferably organic. Next is pasteurized butter from grass-fed cows, followed by regular pasteurized butter from supermarkets. Even the latter two are still a much healthier choice than margarine or spreads.

2. Protect Your Heart:
A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that pomegranate juice combats hardening of the arteries and related diseases like heart attacks and strokes. It seems to limit the genetic tendency toward hardening of the arteries.
“The protective effects of pomegranate juice were higher than previously assumed,” said Claudio Napoli, the study’s author and a professor of medicine and clinical pathology at the University of Naples, Italy.
Another study in the September 16 issue of the Journal of Cardiology found that after patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) drank pomegranate juice every day for three months:
• Blood flow to the heart improved by about 17 percent in the pomegranate group.
• Blood flow declined by 18 percent in the placebo group.
“In conclusion, daily consumption of pomegranate juice may improve stress-induced myocardial ischemia in patients who have CHD,” researchers said.

Pomegranate extract may be useful in fighting osteoarthritis, according to a study at Case Western Reserve University, published in The Journal of Nutrition. In lab tests, the extract:
• Cut levels of an inflammatory chemical called interleukin-1b (IL-1b).
• Stopped enzymes that erode cartilage.
Researchers said their findings “indicate the pomegranate fruit extract or compounds derived from it may inhibit cartilage degradation in osteoarthritis and may also be a useful nutritive supplement for maintaining joint integrity and function.”

4. Keep Prostate Cancer From Returning
A study found that pomegranate juice may help fight the return of prostate cancer among men who have had surgery or radiation for the disease. In fact, among 48 such men who drank 8 ounces of pomegranate juice each day until their prostate cancer progressed:
• The juice significantly lengthened the time it took for the men’s average PSA levels (a gauge of prostate cancer progression) to double.
• None of the men developed cancer that spread beyond the prostate during the study.”Pomegranate juice contains antioxidant chemicals that may have cancer-preventing benefits,” the researchers said.

5. Help Lower Bad Cholesterol
Antioxidants in pomegranates have been found to reduce the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol in mice, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

6. Lower Blood Pressure
A study also found that pomegranates help lower blood pressure among people with hypertension.

7. Get Your Nutrients
One pomegranate has about 40 percent of the recommended daily vitamin C requirement for adults, along with folic acid, fiber, potassium, niacin and vitamins A and E.

8. Protection for Newborns
A study published in Pediatric Research found that drinking pomegranate juice during pregnancy helped protect newborns’ brains during traumatic births.

9. Fight Breast Cancer
Israeli researchers found that pomegranate seed oil causes breast cancer cells to self-destruct, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.
In addition , pomegranate juice also inhibits the formation of new tumors by inhibiting the function of cellular proteins.

Ayurveda Mock tails

Recently when I visited to some restaurants, they start providing some new drinks called “Mock tails”. A new trend is entering, particularly in Indian Restaurants.

Of course, I also attracted to that very vibrant eye catchy colored juices and nice beautiful glasses. The servant is making the mock tails via very interesting way. Very immediate response of mine was “yah, I want to try it”, and that response is not my only, everybody craves to have it.

I grab the Menu card and start to look on the types of Mock tails. A big list was there, and in the bracket there is brief description was also mentioned.

With my big surprises, I found the description little awkward.  I mean, they had given very nice – poppy names to each type o mock tails. But what about its combinations?

Well, some dishes contain flavored soda and ice cream, some contain mixture of fruits juices with milk, and some contain soda + fruit juices and milk and so on…!

All this combination is not good for health. Ayurveda science say strictly “no” to some combinations of foods. By coming together their qualities acts as a poison in body. Such combinations of two or more substances which are not having an affinity for each other is called as Virrudha Aahar in Ayurveda.

Sour tasted fruits with milk, soda with milk / ice cream, fruits with milk, Fruits with soda, flavored synthetic syrup with milk / soda all these are strongly not advisable.

Such food give rises to many chemical reactions in our body which can n ot be visualized soon, they affects cellular body built, blood and their chemical constitutes. And Later after long time one may develops skin diseases, genetic disturbances, swellings on limbs, Blood impurities, poor skin complexion, Psoriasis, hair problems and so on.

Some of this food directly acts on digestive system and liver causing anorexia, colitis, vomiting, poor digestion, lack of digestive enzymes etc.

So according to me we should not attracted by poppy eye catchy names of such dishes. Mock tail concept is good one actually. There is good combinations are available in markets. But such wrong combination and dishes should be avoided.

Its our duty to be careful for our health, everything that we eat in air conditioned and well managed hotels is not best every time.

There are some recipes of some good mock tails; we can make some Ayurveda mock tails also which are tasty as well as healthy also.

Avoid Health Possessiveness

Possessiveness of being healthy or phobia of illness both are very dangerous factors nowadays. Nowadays we people tends to become over possessive for their health and related matters.

We are watching and examining such patients in our routine consulting schedule. Recently a 32 yr old lady came to my clinic; she was suffering from mild chest pain since 3 months. Before my consulting she did self medication advised by her family friend but didn’t felt any relief. Then she suspects her illness as a big diseases and went to hospital where she pas through various and so many investigation and reports. But everything was normal, but she had still doubt, and so again she went to another diagnostic centre and done all the investigations again. Thus she did so many unnecessary expenses and took unnecessary medication also.

Another case is of possessiveness of being healthy, a 40 yr old man taking 4 different medications for Digestion, Heart trouble and to increase his memory power. Though he was totally healthy and don’t have related problems then also he wanna keep himself healthy.

Nowadays there is high flow of health related articles in news papers / on internet and everywhere, one just read it and starts following the so called “tips” for Healthy body. All this articles are for awareness, don’t follow them blindly. Always Consult the Ayurveda doctors and seek advise properly.

Some people think a lot if they don’t pass the stool in the morning.  And they become nervous, starts consuming medication n so on. Whole day they will think about their indigestion and finding the cause why they didn’t urge to pass the stool.  Sometime it seems funny but phobia of being ill or over cautious about your health leads to mental disorders like anxiety, depression, and anger and so on.

One must take some caution of their health. But possessiveness or over cautious is dangerous for health. Some people tend to take multivitamins capsules every day. Overdose of vitamins and such medicines  are very dangerous for the health.  Some have doubt that they have cancer or aids or colitis or such big disease when they got simple fever or stomach ache or some little health problems.

It’s very true that one should take care of their health, But not this way. We must follow some rules of Day-night and seasons, that is described very nicely in Ayurveda Science under heading of Dincharya and Rutucharya.

We must be punctual in our lifestyle; we must improve our habits to improve our health. And by this way we can live better healthy life. We must do yoga, Pranayam and exercise every day. Ayurveda is science where it teaches how to be healthy for long time. And Ayurveda describes various way to improve our Quality of life.

So go and consult your Ayurveda doctor to improve your health naturally, take medication according to their prescriptions and give them follow up regularly.

For Healthy life, always avoid self medication, don’t be over possessive for your health, but be cautious for your health. Take care….!
